Hey folks,
I'm excited to announce something I've been working on: limited-edition prints for paid members.
I’m re-tooling the newsletter and adding a little more structure. Generally speaking, Sundays are going to be photography-centric posts with some creative meditations, while Thursdays will be essays and narrative pieces on food, drink, and travel.
Additionally, paid members will get:
A limited-edition fine art print of your choice (details below).
Access to my Meander app.
Members-only series and behind-the-scenes work.
More details here. Standard memberships will be $7/month or $70/year, but for the next week you can get 10% off forever with this link.
My work is guided by the philosophy of "Unlocking the Commons":
The most economically powerful thing you can do is to buy something for your own enjoyment that also improves the world. This has always been the value proposition of journalism and art. It’s a nonexclusive good that’s best enjoyed nonexclusively.
- Tim Carmody, Nieman Lab
Essentially, this means that your support helps me to keep the lights on here, invest in the storytelling, experiment, and allow the majority of my work to be freely accessible for all. Most of my projects take me around to far-off places that require expensive plane tickets, lodging, camera gear, and most importantly, time. Projects like investigating the state of English pubs, understanding raicilla, and conversations with Irish poitín distillers, and more.
Now you might be thinking “hey man I’m not going to pay for your vacation.” To which I say, fair play, but if you were to see some of the places I’ve stayed I promise you wouldn’t be very impressed...Anyway, while "Unlocking the Commons" is still the guiding principle, I also want to offer something special to the members who make this work possible.
Earlier this year, I sent out the FIRST EVER print to Hope, who messaged me and was kind enough to sign up after I explained the deal:

How it works:
Sign up and you’ll get a welcome email with a link to a print selection form.
Each image limited to 10 prints, never to be printed again (first come, first served).
Each print will be 8x10 using archival paper and ink, and matted for an 11x14 frame. Prints are personally made by me at a Seattle photography nonprofit, no print on demand service is used.
Occasionally I’ll accommodate ad hoc requests, so if you’ve seen anything I’ve posted that you’d like printed, send me a message.
I’m only shipping to U.S. addresses for now, but if you’re outside the U.S. send me a note and we can try and work something out!
If you’re already a paid member reply here or message me and I’ll get you set up. Below are the photos and quantity I’m currently printing:
Porteño (x10)
Roman Reflections (x10)
Lazy Yorkshire Cows (x10)
Late Afternoon Sun in Oaxaca (x10)
Dreaming in Portugal (x9)
All told I think it’s a pretty compelling membership! So if you enjoy the writing and/or photography, consider supporting if you have the means. And don’t forget, sign up in the next week and 10% off your membership.
Cheers,
Skylar
I’m now imagining you getting bombarded my messages from IG/Tik Tok “influencers” who want you to send them your photos for free in exchange for them mentioning you and holding up your photo on their next reel. I mean, the traffic they’ll bring you …
