I agree, but it shouldn't always have live music. Live music sometimes is great- I think back to the Red Onion Saloon in Skagway, Alaska, when Ted and I got drunk enough listening to a live band that we had to avoid the rest of the family when we got back on the cruise ship.
I can’t argue against a single of your observations, but let me add an idea: at a good bar, some of people there know each other. It’s not required that everyone be known, but seeing that the people there are there because they feel like they’ll find friends is a good recommendation that it’s a decent place.
There are so many possibilities! And think the quality of what we want changes as we age.
Now I really like a place that has a little romance, for whatever reason -- be it the room, the vibe, the seats, the booths, the bar and the size of it itself, even the patrons. I've totally become a romanticist -- and depending on if it's in Indonesia vs NYC - romance differs, if you get my drift. In other words -- I can like a place immediately if it fits the bill, and I'd wager you're not far behind.
Very true! It definitely changes with age, or at least our appreciation of certain aspects change. And there is definitely some hard to articulate quality that you can kind of sense almost immediately with a bar...maybe in a way it's similar with people, where within a few minutes you have a sense of what their deal is haha. I was trying to figure out what exactly that is while as agnostic to location as possible haha
My litmus test for a good bar is: does it have a regular who’s a longshoreman who can’t remember how he proposed to his first wife. There are two bars that meet this criteria in Tacoma
I may disagree on live music 👀
THIS IS MY LIST
🤣🤣🤣

Hahaha I love the family lore! Yeah I enjoy love music but I prefer to seek it out

100% agree without a doubt, or if they say hi to the bartender on the way in (or vice versa)
I wish I enjoyed bars more. Perhaps you can show me a good one when I'm next in Seattle!
Yes definitely!
I firmly second all of this. Except that I'd allow a biweekly scheduled karaoke night.
hahah just give me a heads up on the karaoke night schedule and I might pass on that night 😂
Well said!
Thank you!

hahah I love the specificity of that, amazing. didn't know you're in Tacoma!
Somebody has to be, as I always say. I love it here.
